Song of the Sea

by Anthony Hodgson

/

about

I grew up in Whitby, northern England, a small port on the eastern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, facing the sea. In the summer it is a magnet for tourists with its ancient abbey and sandy beaches. In the winter it faces the howling wrath of the North Sea. I used to love walking out to the end of the east pier (when you could before the walkway gave way) when the tide was in. It's another world, with the howling wind, the waves smashing against the cliffs and the spray over the pier. Then going back to the cosy Duke for a much appreciated pint or two!

lyrics

I stand out here alone and cold
Out among the wind and sea
Above my head the gulls screech hard
While the wind screams at me

And the sea crashes relentlessly
And the wind smashes relentlessly

I stand out here, a slip of rock
Is all that separates me
From the stampeding white horses
Of the black, cruel sea

Back there there lies another world
There a town, tranquillity
But it is just another world
Which does not know the sea
